The Art of Slow Tobacco
There is a particular quality to the silence that gathers in a room when a pipe is lit. It is not the silence of emptiness, but of fullness — of thought finding its proper pace. The pipe has been the companion of philosophers, poets, and men of affairs for five centuries, and it has never hurried any of them. That, we believe, is its greatest virtue.
Faridunhill was born from three decades of obsession. Our founder began collecting estate pipes in the early 1990s, haunting antique shops, estate sales, and tobacco auctions with the particular fervour of a man who has found his calling. Each pipe told a story — of the hands that carved it, the workshops of Saint-Claude and Pesaro, the tobacconists of London's Jermyn Street, the smokers who wore grooves into the stem with their teeth.
That knowledge — hard-won, lovingly accumulated — is the foundation of everything we sell. When we curate a pipe for our shelves, we smoke it first. When we select a tobacco blend, we taste it slowly, over weeks, in different conditions and different moods. We stock nothing we would not be proud to smoke ourselves.
“A pipe is the philosopher's pen — it slows the mind and sharpens thought.
We are, above all, a shop for the serious smoker and the curious beginner alike. The man who has smoked the same Dunhill Shell Briar for forty years will find us a worthy resource. So will the young man who has just read his first Sherlock Holmes and feels, not unreasonably, that a pipe might help him think. We welcome them both with equal warmth, and the same depth of knowledge.
This is Faridunhill: a gentleman's tobacconist for the twenty-first century, built on the values of the nineteenth. We hope you will stay a while.
Yours in smoke,
F. Dunhill

A Story in Smoke
It was nearly nine o'clock when Harrington produced the tin from his coat — a Samuel Gawith blend he'd kept back from a journey to Kendal the previous autumn. The library was quiet save for the tick of the grandfather clock and the occasional settling of the fire. He pressed the flake into the bowl with a deliberateness that suggested the evening had been planned with some care.
The meerschaum had been his grandfather's — purchased in Vienna in the winter of 1923. It had coloured to a deep amber over the years, wearing its history in the gradations of its patina. He did not smoke it often. It was a pipe for important evenings, for decisions that deserved the weight of something older than himself.
The tins arrived from London on a Tuesday, wrapped in brown paper and tied with twine in the old manner. He laid them out on the desk one by one — Dunhill, Samuel Gawith, Cornell & Diehl — each one a small promise. Outside, November pressed its grey face against the window. Inside, the lamp burned steadily, and the evening arranged itself around the agreeable question of which tin to open first.
There is a particular quality to the first draw of a well-packed pipe — a resistance, then a give, and then the smoke comes, warm and slow, carrying with it the suggestion that the next hour need not be hurried. He sat back in the leather chair and watched the light change on the ceiling. The tobacco was Virginia, dark and sweet. The afternoon, at last, had found its proper pace.
The letter from his brother arrived the same morning as the Peterson System he'd ordered. He set them side by side on the desk — the pipe unsmoked, the letter unread — and regarded them both with equal anticipation. Some pleasures are better for being deferred. He lit the pipe first, as was only proper, and then broke the seal on the envelope, and read slowly, in the way that good letters deserve.

There is no rush in pipe smoking — and that is precisely the point. Here is how to begin, correctly, without the bad habits that most beginners acquire and then spend years unlearning.
The Collector's Guide to Estate Pipes: What to Look For, What to Avoid
An estate pipe is a previously-owned pipe, and in the pipe world, this is rarely a disadvantage. Here is thirty years of hard-won wisdom on finding, assessing, and restoring the pipes that other smokers have left behind.
Virginia Tobacco: A Complete Guide to the World's Most Important Pipe Leaf
Virginia leaf is the backbone of the pipe tobacco world — the grape of the vineyard, the grain of the whisky. Understanding it will change how you smoke, and what you smoke. Here is everything you need to know.

The finest online tobacconist I've found
“I've been smoking pipes for twenty-two years and tried every major online shop. Faridunhill is in a different class entirely. The estate pipe I purchased was exactly as described — ghost-free and beautifully restored — and arrived wrapped as if it were a gift. The accompanying card with notes on its likely provenance was a thoughtful touch I didn't expect.”

Starter set changed my relationship with evenings
“My wife gave me the Gentleman's Starter Set for my birthday on a whim, not knowing what she was starting. That was eight months ago. I've since acquired four more pipes and a small cellar of Virginia flakes. The little booklet included was remarkably useful and written with genuine enthusiasm. I am, as they say, lost.”

Samuel Gawith Full Virginia Flake — magnificent
“I'd read about this tobacco for years before ordering. Faridunhill had it in stock when no one else did, shipped quickly, and it arrived in perfect condition. The tobacco itself is everything the reviews promise — slow, sweet, and deeply satisfying in a long billiard. I've ordered three more tins to put down for a year.”

Bought a gift, became a regular customer
“I ordered the Collector's Gift Box for my father's retirement without knowing much about pipes. The box itself was extraordinary — velvet-lined, beautifully presented. My father, who has smoked a pipe for thirty years, called it the finest gift he'd received in a decade. I've since come back for myself and find the leather pipe bags are exceptional.”

Outstanding selection, fast shipping
“The Peterson Churchwarden was well-packed and arrived in two days. Exactly what was described. I'd give five stars but I'm waiting to see how the stem holds up over time before I commit fully. That said, first impressions of the smoke are excellent — cool and dry throughout, which is exactly what a long pipe should do.”

The leather pipe roll is heirloom quality
“I've bought leather goods from specialist makers in London and Italy. This pipe roll is on that level. The vegetable tanning, the hand stitching, the weight of the leather — it will last longer than I will. My three pipes travel in it now and arrive perfectly protected. I'm ordering a second for the cigars.”
