Jürgen Moritz Freehand 323 Sandblast Egg Pipe

J. MORITZ on the underside of the shank, and the number 323 beside it: this is a Jürgen Moritz freehand, a straight sandblasted egg with a flat, smooth rim and a striped extension set between the shank and the tapered stem.

The bowl is rounded and fuller toward its base than at the rim, the shape pipe makers call an egg, because it stands like an egg on its end. Here the egg is carried on a straight line from bowl to bit: shank, extension and stem run in one direction, and the bit flares a little at its end. The extension is a separate piece with light and dark stripes and a thin ring where it meets the shank; its material is not known.

- J. MORITZ, stamped on the underside of the shank
- 323, stamped beside it (the middle digit is not sharp)
- a second line beside the name, not readable in the photographs

The sandblast covers the bowl and the shank. A blast takes away the softer wood and leaves the harder growth rings raised as ridges and furrows. Only the rim is left smooth and flat, a plain ring around the chamber.
