IDENTIFICATION
This is a hand-carved meerschaum cigar holder in ornamental flower bloom design, Turkish origin, circa 1890-1920. The piece features a reddish-amber stem with custom cooling tenon, designed to hold 0.5-inch diameter cigars. A rare functional sculpture from the golden age of meerschaum craftsmanship.
HISTORICAL CONTEXT
Meerschaum (sepiolite), a hydrous magnesium silicate mineral, became the premium material for pipes and cigar accessories in the early 18th century. Turkish deposits near Eskisehir supplied master carvers whose work began spreading throughout Europe by mid-1800s. Meerschaum cigar holders achieved peak popularity among European and Ottoman nobility from 1870-1914, valued for cool, dry smoke delivery without flavor transfer. The craft declined after World War I due to briar pipe competition and disrupted trade routes. This piece represents the refined artistry of late Ottoman-era Turkish makers, when meerschaum carving was at its apex.
