A tall cylinder of meerschaum with a curved rim that stands out wider than the bowl: this is an old-school Turkish meerschaum chimney. It sits on a long, straight shank, with an amber-color Bakelite stem that is joined to the shank by a screw tenon and ends in a fishtail bit. It takes no filter.
The pipe carries no stamp. An engraved flower decorates the side of the bowl; the rest of the bowl is smooth.
THE MARKS
- No stamp on the pipe
A chimney bowl is a tall cylinder, much taller than it is wide, and this one shows it in the numbers: the bowl is 65 mm high and 38 mm wide, and the chamber is 20 mm across and 58 mm deep. At its top the rim curves out into a lip wider than the bowl below it. The shank is long and straight, and the whole pipe measures 170 mm.
A screw tenon is a threaded fitting: the stem screws on instead of pushing in. On this pipe the threaded peg stands out from the end of the shank, and the stem screws onto it.
Meerschaum is the mineral sepiolite, best known from the deposits around Eskisehir in Turkey. It is a light material, and this pipe weighs 40 g at 170 mm long. With smoking, meerschaum often takes on color over time. No date is given for this pipe.
Condition: please see the photographs.
