Vintage Coltron Silver-Plated Dual Cigar Tube and Liquor Flask with Innovative Flavor Evaporation System - Model 04.515 - A Rare Tobacciana Gem for Discerning Collectors
Item Overview
Elevate your tobacciana collection with this exceptional vintage Coltron combination cigar holder and flask, a testament to mid-20th-century ingenuity in luxury smoking accessories. Crafted in silver-plated metal, this Model 04.515 features a seamless fusion of form and function: a protective 7-inch cigar tube designed for large-format cigars (such as Churchills or robustos) alongside a 2-ounce flask for your preferred spirit. What sets this piece apart is its patented “flavor evaporation system,” a sophisticated mechanism that allows controlled infusion of alcohol vapors into the cigar, enhancing flavor profiles while maintaining optimal humidity—a feature rarely seen in comparable items from the era.
This complete set includes the original blue Coltron packaging box (with subtle wear commensurate with age), a black plastic display insert, a clear protective tray, and the original instruction sheet, making it a fully documented artifact ideal for serious collectors. Acquired from a private estate, this item embodies the golden age of portable luxury for the sophisticated smoker, blending European craftsmanship with practical innovation. At the Pipe Collectors Encyclopedia (your emerging destination for in-depth tobacciana knowledge, history, and rarities), we curate pieces like this to serve as educational cornerstones for enthusiasts seeking not just objects, but stories from tobacco’s rich heritage.
Historical Context and Dating
The tradition of combining cigar storage with liquor flasks traces its roots to the evolution of hip flasks in the 18th century, when silver became a preferred material for preserving spirits due to its non-reactive properties and luxurious appeal. By the mid-20th century, as cigar culture flourished among executives, travelers, and connoisseurs, novelty accessories emerged to cater to on-the-go indulgence. Brands like Coltron—believed to be of European origin, possibly German or Swiss based on design aesthetics and linguistic nuances in the instructions—specialized in silver-plated items that merged utility with elegance.
This Model 04.515 likely dates to the 1970s or 1980s, inferred from the box’s graphic design (featuring a stylized sunburst logo), the use of molded plastic packaging, and the era’s focus on innovative humidification systems. Similar dual-purpose items from Sheffield Plate manufacturers in England (e.g., 20th-century silver cigar holders with integrated flasks) highlight a broader trend in British and Continental European silversmithing, where silver plating provided an affordable yet durable alternative to solid sterling. Coltron’s flavor evaporation system represents a pinnacle of this innovation, predating modern vapor-infused cigar technologies and drawing from principles of controlled evaporation seen in early perfume atomizers and humidors. While Coltron remains an obscure brand in mainstream records—possibly a boutique producer for upscale markets—this scarcity enhances its collectible allure, positioning it as a hidden gem akin to limited-edition pieces from Ronson or Dunhill.
Shape and Design Description
Measuring approximately 7 inches in length and 1.5 inches in width at its widest point, this piece adopts a distinctive figure-8 silhouette formed by two parallel cylindrical tubes soldered together for stability and portability. The silver-plated exterior exhibits a polished, ribbed texture along the body for enhanced grip, with threaded domed caps at both ends for secure closure. One tube serves as the cigar chamber, accommodating cigars up to 7 inches long with a generous ring gauge; the other is the flask reservoir, holding up to 2 ounces of liquor via a screw-top filler cap.
The top assembly incorporates the flavor evaporation system’s activation mechanism: a twistable upper half with alignment indicators (a full line for “activated” mode, allowing vapor transfer; a broken line for “de-activated” to preserve contents). Internally, a sponge-like element facilitates the slow release of micro-droplets, creating a micro-climate that imparts subtle spirit notes—think cognac-infused tobacco or rum-enhanced draws—while preventing dryness. Drawings on the instruction sheet illustrate the top view of the flask in both states, underscoring the engineering precision. This design not only protects against environmental factors but also grants a “unique climatic condition,” as described by Coltron, making it a precursor to today’s flavored cigar trends.
Detailed Features from the Original Instruction Sheet
For authenticity and educational value, we’ve transcribed the original instructions verbatim (with minor clarifications for readability, preserving the charming non-native English phrasing indicative of European manufacturing):
Instruction Sheet for items 04.514
1.5 oz. flask with 6” cigar tube w. flavor evaporation system
04.515
2.0 oz. flask with 7” cigar tube w. flavor evaporation system
The a.m. items have a new developed flavor evaporation system which should provide the cigar with all advantages as follows:
• the flavor of your favorite alcoholic drink will get into the cigar
• protection against dryness
• granting a unique climatic condition.
You will find the system inside the top of the flask and it will be activated or de-activated by turning the upper half of the top (see drawing).
The system only works after you filled alcohol into the flask and closed the top. Then shake flask few times. After that smallest drops of alcohol will get through a tiny hole inside the top of flask where there is a sponge keeping it and let the flavor out to the cigar after activation.
In case there will come out smallest drops of alcohol - don’t worry, this is not a defect but must be so that the flavor evaporation system will work as intended.
Shouldn’t you want the flavor evaporation system because you did not put a cigar in then pls. de-activate to prevent that alcohol will lose its flavor.

Condition Report
This vintage piece is in very good overall condition for its age, retaining much of its original luster and full functionality. The silver plating shows authentic patina: minor fading in high-contact areas (such as the base and caps), light tarnish spots that could be gently polished if desired, and a few tiny surface scratches from normal handling—hallmarks of genuine use rather than defects. No dents, leaks, or structural issues; the threads operate smoothly, and the evaporation system activates as intended. The box exhibits edge wear and slight discoloration, while the plastic inserts remain intact without cracks. Presented as-is to preserve its historical integrity, this condition supports a collector-friendly price point, reflecting its rarity without over-restoration.
