VAUEN, Luxus and 037 are stamped on the shank of this pipe. It is a Vauen Luxus 037, a smooth bent Dublin sitter from the oldest pipe factory in Germany, fitted with a vulcanite saddle stem, a fishtail bit and a 9mm filter.
Vauen's story starts in 1848 in Nuremberg, where Karl Ellenberger and Carl August Ziener opened what is recorded as the first German pipe factory. In 1901 the firm merged with Gebhard Ott, a house founded in 1866, and became the Vereinigte Pfeifenfabriken Nuernberg, managed by Ernst Eckert of the Ott family. In 1909 Adolf Eckert coined the name VAUEN, taken from the V of Vereinigte and the N of Nuernberg. In the 1920s the white dot became the trademark for pipes sold in Germany and Austria; after a court case against Dunhill, light blue and grey dots have marked the export pipes. The family still runs the company: Alexander Eckert, the fifth generation, has led it since 1982.
Vauen is also tied to the filter pipe. A paper filter came in 1921, and in 1934 the company introduced the Dr. Perl 9mm activated-carbon filter, a world first; today more than 90 percent of the pipes made for the German market take the 9mm filter.
THE MARKS
- VAUEN / Luxus stamped on the shank
- 037 stamped on the shank
This pipe is a sitter: it is made to stand upright on a table without a rack. The bowl is a Dublin, a shape that widens toward the rim, and the shank carries the bend that brings the bit down toward the smoker. The saddle stem is vulcanite and ends in a fishtail bit that spreads the draw across the tongue. The photographs show the smooth bowl with a strong grain pattern; please see the photographs for the grain.
DATING: the name VAUEN was coined in 1909, so any pipe stamped VAUEN is from 1909 or later. A 9mm filter chamber points to 1934 or later, the year of the Dr. Perl filter; the cabinet treats this as a floor, not a date. Nothing else stamped on this pipe narrows the span further.
Condition: pre-smoked, in good condition, with rim darkness and dents and scratches around the briar. Please see the photographs.
