VAUEN in block capitals over Dr Perl in script, and the number 80: this is a Vauen Dr Perl 80, a sandblasted churchwarden with a brass band and a long vulcanite saddle stem that ends in a P-lip fishtail mouthpiece.
It is pre-smoked, in good vintage condition, and it has no filter. VAUEN and Dr Perl are legible, and so is the 80; the faint letters after it cannot be read in the photographs, and a small pictorial emblem sits near the band.
Vauen is the name of a merger. In 1848 Karl Ellenberger and Carl August Ziener opened a pipe factory in Nuremberg, recorded as the first in Germany, and in 1866 Gebhard Ott founded his own pipe works. The two houses joined in 1901 as the Vereinigte Pfeifenfabriken Nurnberg, run by Ernst Eckert of the Ott family. In 1909 Adolf Eckert made a brand name out of the initials - the V of Vereinigte and the N of Nurnberg - and VAUEN was registered as a trademark on 21 September 1909. The firm has stayed in Nuremberg and in the family since then; Alexander Eckert, of the fifth generation, has led it since 1982.
THE MARKS
- VAUEN / Dr Perl (script) stamped on the shank
- 80 stamped on the shank, followed by faint letters and a small emblem near the band
The Dr. Perl name goes back at least to 1930, when pipes were advertised as "Dr. Perls pat. Trockenrauch-Pfeifen", and in 1934 Vauen brought out the Dr. Perl junior 9 mm activated-carbon filter. This pipe, though, has no filter. No meaning is recorded for the 80, and the VAUEN name places the pipe in 1909 or later; no narrower date is claimed.
A churchwarden is defined by its stem: a small bowl carried far from the face on a very long stem, here 215 mm overall, with a bowl only 39 mm high and 28 mm wide. The brass band sits at the end of the shank where the saddle of the stem meets it, and the stem ends in a P-lip fishtail mouthpiece.
The bowl and shank are sandblasted, with a rugged, textured surface where blasting has worn the softer wood away from the harder growth rings.
Condition: pre-smoked, in good vintage condition.
