"Vanguard Super" Rusticated Bent Billiard Estate Pipe - Oval Shank Vulcanite Fishtail Stem

That single stamp is what we have to go on for the maker, so we print it exactly as it appears and go no further: no founding year, no factory, no home market claimed for a name we cannot cross-reference. What we can describe with confidence is the pipe itself.

This is a bent billiard, rusticated over the bowl, with an oval shank and a vulcanite stem cut to a matching oval taper. The bit is fishtail, and there is no filter system: the draft runs straight through the shank to the bore, unbroken by a chamber for a cartridge or a coring.

The billiard is the reference shape against which most other bowls are measured: a round bowl of moderate height set on a shank of comparable length, walls of even thickness, a rim cut flat and parallel to the base. Bend it and the geometry does not change, only the angle at which the smoker meets it. A bent billiard sits differently in the hand and rides differently in the mouth than its straight sibling, and it is usually chosen for exactly that reason - comfort over the long smoke rather than the look of the thing on a rack. The oval shank and matching oval stem taper are a small refinement on the standard round-shank billiard: the stem is shaped to sit flush against the shank's cross-section rather than merely matching its width, so the transition from wood to vulcanite reads as one continuous line rather than a round peg fitted into an oval socket.

Rustication is a carved texture, not a stain. A briar bowl destined for this treatment is worked with a rasp, a wire brush, or a rotary bit before any finish is applied, cutting grooves and ridges into the surface rather than leaving it sanded smooth. Two things follow from that. First, the texture gives the hand something to grip that a polished bowl does not. Second, rustication has long doubled as a way to finish briar carrying small surface flaws - a pit, a sand mark, a fill - without hiding them under a dark stain; the carving removes the smooth surface the flaw would otherwise show through. A rusticated bowl and a smooth bowl can come from the same block of wood; the rustication is a choice of finish, not a statement about the grade of the briar underneath.

The fishtail bit follows the same logic of comfort over concealment: the slot flares into two shallow wings at the button rather than staying a single narrow channel, spreading the airflow slightly as it reaches the lip. It is a shaping detail, not a filtration one - this pipe carries no filter at all, so the draft is as direct as the design allows.

Condition: the pipe is pre-owned. The seller grades it very good. No cracks, fills, or repairs are noted.
