This large straight billiard is stamped TALAMONA / ACCADEMIA on one side of the shank and FATTA A MANO, Italian for "made by hand", on the other. The bowl is smooth, with a rustic carved area across the bottom and the heel. It is made for a 9mm filter and is pre-smoked and in very good condition.
THE MAKER
Talamona is a workshop in Barasso, in the Varese area of Italy. It was established in 2007 by Paolo Croci, when he took over the workshops of Fratelli Rossi, and the house is known for pipes of generous size. The Rossi name goes back to 1886, when Ferdinando Rossi founded his briar pipe factory at Barasso. In 1918 his son Leonida joined, and the firm became Fratelli Rossi Barasso. Between the wars it was the biggest pipe factory in the world: in 1936, its fiftieth year, it had 860 employees. The factory closed in 1985. Many workers who learned the trade at Rossi went on to found their own houses, and that is how the Varese area became the centre of Italian pipe making.
THE MARKS
- TALAMONA / ACCADEMIA
- FATTA A MANO
THE SHAPE AND THE STEM
A billiard has a round, upright bowl and a straight shank, and this one is large. The smooth surface runs over the sides of the bowl and the whole shank, and the rustic carving covers the bottom of the bowl and comes up the front and the heel. At the end of the shank, next to the stem, sits a light-coloured ring between two thin black lines. The black acrylic stem is a saddle: a wide, flat step near the shank, then a thinner blade, which flares out at the end into a fishtail mouthpiece.
Please see the photographs for the smooth grain, the rustic carving, the stamps and the stem.
DATING
There is no date mark on this pipe. The Talamona name dates from 2007, so the pipe was made in 2007 or later.
