A Svendborg freehand in a full bent apple shape, stamped DANISH / HAND CARVED. It is a unique shape, not the classic Svendborg work.
The bowl is rounded and smooth, with a round rim, and the shank curves into it. The finish is glossy, and grain lines run across the bowl and along the shank. The black acrylic saddle stem is bent and ends in a flared fishtail bit. The tenon is a plain peg, and there is no filter.
THE MARKS
- C, a single capital letter on the top line
- Svendborg in script
- DANISH
- HAND CARVED
- a small gold-coloured looped mark on the side of the stem
The four lines are stamped on the shank. The meaning of the C and of the gold-coloured mark on the stem is not known.
THE SHAPE AND THE STEM
An apple bowl is rounded, like the fruit. On a full bent pipe the bend is deep, so the bit comes back up beside or above the bowl; a freehand like this one is shaped by the carver rather than to a fixed chart shape. A saddle stem has a flat, wide section at the shank end that steps down to a thinner bit.
The pipe is shown with a brown cloth pouch with gold-coloured stitching.
No date is given for this pipe.
Condition: pre-smoked, very good condition. Please see the photographs.
