Stanwell Royal Briar 124 - smooth straight egg / lovat, made in Denmark
The shape. Shape 124 is one of the most unusual shapes in Stanwell's catalogue. It is said to be the joint work of father and son: Sixten Ivarsson, the artisan who lifted Stanwell into the first league of pipe making, and his son Lars Ivarsson, who became perhaps even more famous than his father.
The maker. Stanwell was founded in Denmark in 1942 by Poul Nielsen and registered as Stanwell in 1948. Danish production ended in 2009; later Stanwells are made by Barontini in Italy, so this Danish-made pipe comes from the classic years.
The pipe. Smooth briar, a vulcanite saddle stem, no filter.
Stamps. STANWELL / ROYAL BRIAR / MADE IN DENMARK / 124.
Condition. Pre-smoked, in very good condition. Please see the photos.
Measured. Length 146 mm (5.75 in); bowl height 48 mm (1.89 in); bowl width 41 mm (1.61 in); chamber diameter 20 mm (0.79 in); chamber depth 38 mm (1.50 in); weight 48 g (1.69 oz).
