Stanwell Hand Made 148 - smooth straight Canadian, made in Denmark
The shape. Stanwell shape 148 is a classic Canadian / Lumberman: an oval shank and a short saddle mouthpiece. The shape was designed for Stanwell by the Danish master carver Jess Chonowitsch.
The stem. In the early to mid-1980s Stanwell made a high-grade specialty series whose stems were not pre-moulded, but cut by hand from Cumberland rod stock. This pipe has such a Cumberland saddle stem with the golden-tone Stanwell "S", a fishtail mouthpiece and no filter.
The maker. Stanwell was founded in Denmark in 1942 by Poul Nielsen and registered as Stanwell in 1948. Danish production ended in 2009; later Stanwells are made by Barontini in Italy, so this Danish-made pipe comes from the classic years.
Stamps. STANWELL / HAND MADE / DENMARK / 148.
Condition. Pre-smoked, in very good condition. Please see the photos.
