Stanwell Mat 64 - bent Dublin with a plateau rim, made in Denmark
The shape. Shape 64 is a distinctive, organic freehand-style bent Dublin: a sweeping, forward-leaning bowl, an oval, softly triangular shank and a natural plateau rim - the rough briar surface left on top of the bowl - with a flowing saddle stem.
The finish. "Mat" stands for matte, as on Stanwell's Royal Mat and De Luxe Mat series. Instead of a glossy, heavy varnish, the Mat finish is a smooth, low-shine stain that shows the grain and lets the briar breathe.
The maker. Stanwell was founded in Denmark in 1942 by Poul Nielsen and registered as Stanwell in 1948. Danish production ended in 2009; later Stanwells are made by Barontini in Italy, so this Danish-made pipe comes from the classic years.
The pipe. Vulcanite saddle stem, fishtail mouthpiece, no filter.
Stamps. STANWELL / MADE IN DENMARK / MAT / 64.
Condition. Pre-smoked, in very good condition. Please see the photos.
Measured. Length 141 mm (5.55 in); bowl height 52 mm (2.05 in); bowl width 44 mm (1.73 in); chamber diameter 20 mm (0.79 in); chamber depth 44 mm (1.73 in); weight 58 g (2.05 oz).
