Zebrano in script and MADE IN DENMARK on the shank, and a striped ring set between thin dark spacers at the end of it. This is a Stanwell Zebrano bent billiard in smooth briar, with a vulcanite tapered saddle stem, a 9mm filter and a fishtail mouthpiece.
It is pre-smoked and in good condition; the stain has faded and there are faint scratches around the briar.
Stanwell began in wartime Denmark. In 1942 Poul Nielsen set up pipe production under the name Kyringe, making pipes of beech in the war years; the maker's own catalogue says there were six Danish factories then, and five closed after the war. In 1948 the name Stanwell was registered as a trademark, under the number 969-48, the 48 standing for the year, together with a horse-drawn-carriage logo. New machines came, and from 1952 the pipes were exported to Europe and the United States. In 1965, in the maker's own words, production moved to a new modern factory in Borup (some sources give 1969). A Stanwell catalogue of about 1982 puts the firm at about 35 percent of Danish pipe exports, sold in some 40 countries. Danish production ended at the close of 2009, and from 2010 Stanwell pipes have been made in Italy by Barontini.
THE MARKS

A billiard bowl is a plain cylinder with straight sides and a flat rim. A bent billiard keeps that bowl and puts a bend into the pipe. This bowl is 48 mm high and 40 mm wide, and the chamber is 20 mm across and 40 mm deep.
MADE IN DENMARK places the pipe in Stanwell's Danish years, before production moved to Italy in 2010. No closer date is given.
