Stanwell DM 1997 - sandblasted straight chubby apple, made in Denmark
The story. For many years Stanwell has made the pipes for the slow-smoking competitions held across Denmark. This is why some Stanwells carry letters such as SM, RM or, as here, DM. The M stands for "mesterskab", Danish for championship, and the D for "Danmarks": this pipe was made for the Danish national slow-smoking championship. Made in 1997, it is also one of the last Stanwells with an ebonite stem; acrylic became the standard in 1998. The design is often credited to Bent (Benner) Nielsen, but this is not certain.
The pipe. A distinctly chubby apple, a classic of Scandinavian design, with a sandblasted bowl and shank, a smooth panel for the stamps and a black ebonite stem.
Stamps. STANWELL / MADE IN DENMARK / DM 1997.
Condition. Pre-smoked, in very good condition. Please see the photos.
