STANWELL / MADE IN DENMARK / TULIP on the shank, and a gold-tone crowned S on the shiny acrylic stem, which looks very elegant. This is a Stanwell Tulip bent egg in a sandblast finish, with an acrylic saddle stem, a 9mm filter and a fishtail mouthpiece.
It is pre-smoked and in good condition.
Stanwell grew out of the war years in Denmark. Poul Nielsen started pipe production in 1942 under the name Kyringe, using beech wood; in 1948 Stanwell was registered as a trademark, number 969-48, with a horse-drawn-carriage logo. From 1952 Stanwell pipes went to Europe and the United States. The company's own catalogue says production moved in 1965 to a new factory in Borup (other sources say 1969), and around 1982 it reckoned its share of Danish pipe exports at about 35 percent, in some 40 countries. Production in Denmark ended at the end of 2009, and since 2010 Stanwell pipes have been made by Barontini in Italy.
THE MARKS
- STANWELL / MADE IN DENMARK / TULIP stamped on the shank
- crowned S in gold tone on the stem
No shape number can be read in the photographs. In the copy of Basil Stevens' Stanwell shape list posted on rebornpipes, shape 10 is described as a tulip bowl with an oval stem and a special design mouthpiece, by Sixten Ivarsson; the Pipedia copy of the same list gives other shapes under 10, and Stanwell used some numbers for more than one shape.
An egg bowl is shaped like an egg: rounded, and a little taller than it is wide. On this bent pipe the bowl is 51 mm high and 41 mm wide, with a chamber 20 mm across and 41 mm deep. A gold-tone band sits at the end of the shank.
The sandblast covers the bowl and the shank.
MADE IN DENMARK places the pipe in Stanwell's Danish years, before production moved to Italy in 2010. No closer date is given.
