About this Piece
STANWELL, HAND MADE and the shape number 02 under the shank: a sandblasted Stanwell with an oval bowl, shape 02, a very rare shape.
It has been previously smoked and is in very good condition. There is a little darkness on the rim; it could be removed, but it has been kept for the vintage look. On the shank STANWELL is faint in its first letters, HAND MADE is small but readable, and 02 is clear.
Stanwell grew out of the war years in Denmark. Poul Nielsen set up a pipe production in 1942, working at first in beech, at a time when, by the maker's own catalogue from about 1982, six Danish factories made beech pipes and five of them closed after the war. In 1948 the Stanwell name was registered as a trademark, number 969-48, the 48 marking the year. The same catalogue speaks of about 35 percent of Danish pipe export, sent to about 40 countries. Pipes were made in Denmark until the end of 2009; from 2010 they were made by Barontini in Italy, limited editions excepted.

In the shape list compiled by Bas Stevens and McNally, 02 is first "Freehand, oval bowl and stem, by Sixten Ivarsson", and a second entry under the same number is a bent egg with a sloping top. Another copy of the list words the first 02 as "Straight pot with an oval chamber and a flush flared stem, by Sixten Ivarsson". The oval is what the photographs show here: seen from above, the rim and the chamber are oval, not round, and the stem flares where it leaves the shank and again toward the bit.
The sandblast covers the bowl and the shank. A blast takes away the softer wood and leaves the harder growth rings standing as ridges. Please see the photographs for the rim, the chamber and the stem.
No date is given for this pipe, as the registration line does not show in the photographs.
