Stanwell Danish Design Relief 246 Sandblast Bent Billiard Estate Pipe

A Stanwell listed as the Danish Design Relief, shape 246: a bent billiard in a sandblast finish, as the name says.

Stanwell is a Danish house. Poul Nielsen set up pipe production in 1942, during the war, and the name Stanwell was registered as a trademark in 1948 (Reg. No. 969-48, the 48 standing for the year). From 1952 the pipes went to Europe and the USA, and the maker's own catalogue of about 1982 puts Stanwell at about 35% of Danish pipe export. Danish production ended at the end of 2009; since 2010 Stanwell pipes are made by Barontini in Italy, limited editions excepted.

A note for collectors: on Stanwell pipes, the words DANISH DESIGN in place of MADE IN DENMARK belong to the Italian-made years from 2010. In the Stanwell shape list (Bas Stevens / McNally), 246 is a shape of 2005, named there as the replacement, from 2006, for the bent billiard 85.

A bent billiard keeps the classic round bowl and lets the stem fall in a curve, so the pipe hangs easily in the hand or the teeth.

A sandblast finish is made by blasting the shaped bowl with fine grit: the softer wood goes, the harder grain stands up as a texture you can feel. It hides fingerprints and gives a good grip.
