SORENSEN and MADE IN DENMARK are the marks on this reddish briar pipe, and its rounded bowl gives it the full profile of a bent brandy. It is an unsmoked sitter by Kjeld Sorensen, as identified when it came into the archive, fitted with a vulcanite tapered stem, a fishtail bit and a 9mm filter fitting.
The Danish origin is carried by the country stamp itself. No manufacturing year is assigned to this example. The maker's name and the pipe's own features provide the useful points of identification here: the bent brandy shape, the smooth reddish finish and the tapered mouthpiece. The marks do not include the words describing the shape.
THE MARKS
- SORENSEN stamped on the shank
- MADE IN DENMARK stamped on the shank
A brandy bowl takes its outline from the rounded body of a brandy glass. Instead of maintaining the more upright walls of a billiard, the bowl swells below the rim and curves into its base. On this pipe the shank rises into a bent mouthpiece, giving the fuller bowl a contrasting sweep toward the bit. The sitter form is part of the owner's description of the shape; the photographs show the bowl and underside from several positions.
The smooth finish leaves the briar's visible grain beneath the reddish colour rather than replacing its surface with a sandblast or rustication. Light moves across the rounded bowl differently from one side to the other, and the photographs show that variation without assigning an undocumented grade to the wood.
The vulcanite stem tapers progressively from the shank to a fishtail mouthpiece. Vulcanite is a hard rubber used widely for pipe stems; the fishtail describes the flattened bit. This example is specified for a 9mm filter. The stem-out photograph shows the fitting separately from the bowl, an important detail when comparing a filter pipe with an unfiltered one.
Condition: Unsmoked. Expect some dirt inside the chamber from long storage. Please inspect the photographs of the bowl, rim, chamber, shank and stem; unsmoked is not a claim that storage has left the pipe untouched.
