Unsigned Smooth Straight Small Bowl Estate Pipe - New Old Stock, Unsmoked, Vulcanite Diamond Taper Stem

Never lit. Never carried in a pocket, never scraped out, never relit after a bowl went cold. This one left whatever bench made it and went straight into a drawer, and it has stayed that way until now.

The pipe is a small, straight-shanked bowl - the seller describes it as sitting between a size 1 and a size 2, at the top of that range - finished smooth, fitted with a vulcanite stem cut to a diamond taper and a fishtail slot at the bit. There is no filter bore. There is no maker's stamp anywhere on the shank.

No maker, no model line, no country mark and no shape number are stamped on this pipe, and none is claimed here. What can be said comes from the object itself and from what new old stock means for a pipe like this: a bowl cut and finished, fitted with a stem, and then never sold and never smoked, sometimes for decades, until it surfaces in an estate lot exactly as it left the rack.

A straight shank with a tapered vulcanite stem is among the oldest and simplest pipe configurations there is - no bend to steam into the vulcanite, no metal mount to fit, just briar and rubber meeting at a plain joint. The diamond taper is a stem cut with faceted sides rather than a round cross-section, narrowing from shank to bit; it gives the fingers a grip reference in low light and reads, under a lamp, as a small piece of stem-cutting craft rather than a simple round dowel. The fishtail slot - a bit opening shaped like a shallow V rather than a single round hole - spreads the draw across a wider slot, which tends to keep the smoke from channeling to one side of the tongue.

The bowl is small and compact: a chamber 17mm across and 29mm deep, in a bowl only 35mm tall and 37mm wide. That is a bowl nearly as wide as it is tall, with a deep chamber relative to its height - a shape built for an efficient, shorter smoke rather than a long afternoon session, and light enough at 23.5 grams to sit comfortably in the hand or between the teeth without strain. At 160mm overall it is a full-length pipe despite the small bowl, the extra length carried entirely in the straight shank and stem.

The finish is smooth - the briar sanded and buffed rather than blasted or rusticated, so the surface is even under the fingers and the grain lies visible beneath the stain. Tone and grain pattern are best judged from the photographs.

- No maker's stamp, no shape number, no country-of-origin mark - the shank is blank.

Condition: new old stock, unsmoked. The chamber shows bare briar, with no cake and no scorching from use. No fills, cracks, or repairs are noted. Stem uncut and unaltered, diamond taper and fishtail slot intact.
