Silver Match Real Briar 121 Smooth Dublin Estate Pipe, Vulcanite Fishtail Stem

SILVER MATCH in outlined italic capitals, then REAL BRIAR and the number 121, all on the shank. This is a Silver Match Real Briar 121, a smooth straight Dublin on a vulcanite tapered stem with a fishtail mouthpiece and no filter.

It shows the signs of long storage time, and it may have been smoked just once. SILVER MATCH and 121 read clearly, and REAL BRIAR is a little worn but legible. An engraved curved mark sits on the side of the stem near the shank; its meaning is not known.

A Dublin bowl widens from the heel toward the rim, so the walls lean outward instead of rising straight up as on a billiard. On this pipe the bowl opens to 33 mm across and stands 47 mm high, with a flat rim and a chamber 20 mm wide and 41 mm deep. The shank runs straight into the stem, and the whole pipe stays in one line from the rim to the bit.

The stem is vulcanite and tapered: it narrows gradually from the shank to the mouthpiece, which ends in a flat fishtail bit.

The finish is smooth, and grain lines show on the sides of the bowl; please see the photographs for the grain.

No date is given for this pipe, and the stamps name no country of make.

Condition: pre-smoked, excellent, with faint scratches and dents around the briar.
