Dr Boston Bistro Filter 9 Smooth Straight Apple Estate Pipe, Thin Metal Band

DR BOSTON, BISTRO and FILTER 9 in three lines on the shank, with MADE IN FRANCE stamped there too: this is a smooth straight apple with a thin metal band at the shank end, made for a 9 mm filter.

FILTER 9 is the faintest of the three lines, and a number beside MADE IN FRANCE is too faint to read with certainty. A small emblem sits on the stem.

THE MARKS

- DR BOSTON in capitals, stamped on the shank
- BISTRO in capitals, stamped under it
- FILTER 9 in capitals, stamped under it (faint)
- MADE IN FRANCE in capitals, stamped on the shank
- a four-digit number, stamped on the shank (faint)

FILTER 9 marks a pipe bored for a 9 mm filter. The meaning of BISTRO and of the number is not known, and no date is given for this pipe.

The apple takes its name from its round bowl, rounded at the sides and the heel like the fruit. Here it sits on a straight shank, and the bowl is 45 mm high and 44 mm wide, almost as wide as it is high, around a chamber 20 mm across and 38 mm deep. The pipe is 143 mm long and weighs 57 g.

The finish is smooth, and the grain shows on the bowl.
