Large, paneled and bent, this churchwarden measures 275 mm from end to end. It is a smooth, large paneled bent churchwarden with no stamp, fitted with a shiny black acrylic tapered stem, bored for a 9mm filter and finished with a fishtail mouthpiece.
Condition: pre-smoked, excellent. There is a tiny scratch on the stem, which needs a little sanding. The bowl and the shank are both cut in flat panels, and the bend is in the long stem.
THE MARKS
- No stamp. No maker's name appears on the pipe, and no date is given for it.
A churchwarden is a pipe with a long stem, much longer than the bowl and shank together, so that the bowl sits well out in front of the smoker's face. The shape has been made for centuries, first in clay and later in other materials. A bent churchwarden adds a curve to that long line.
This one carries a large bowl: 57 mm high and 42 mm wide, with a chamber 22 mm across and 45 mm deep. Instead of a round outline, the bowl is cut in flat faces that meet at sharp edges, and the shank is paneled in the same way.
The stem is shiny black acrylic. It tapers along its length to a fishtail mouthpiece, and it is bored for a 9mm filter.
The finish is smooth and light brown, and grain figure shows across the flat panels of the bowl and on the shank.
