STANWELL / ROYAL / KLASSIC / MADE IN DENMARK on the shank, and the number 160. This is a large Stanwell Royal Klassic in a smooth full bent apple shape, with a vulcanite tapered stem, a 9mm filter and a fishtail bit.
Pre-smoked, it is in very good condition.
The Stanwell story starts in 1942, when Poul Nielsen began making pipes in Denmark under the name Kyringe, of beech wood, during the war. In 1948 the Stanwell name was registered as a trademark, number 969-48, with 48 for the year, and a horse-drawn carriage as its logo. Export to Europe and the United States followed from 1952. The maker's own catalogue gives 1965 as the year production moved to a modern factory in Borup, while some sources say 1969. By about 1982 Stanwell was making some 35 percent of Denmark's pipe exports, for about 40 countries. Pipes were made in Denmark until the end of 2009; since 2010 the work has been done by Barontini in Italy.
THE MARKS
- STANWELL / ROYAL / KLASSIC / MADE IN DENMARK stamped on the shank
- 160 stamped on the pipe
The Stanwell shape-number list compiled by Basil Stevens and revised by James McNally gives 160 as a large bent with a conical bowl, by Jess Chonowitsch; we describe this bowl as an apple. Pipedia warns that Stanwell used the same number for two to four different shapes over the decades, so a number names the candidates and the pipe itself decides.
An apple bowl is rounded all over, like the fruit it is named after. On a full bent pipe the bend is deep, and the bowl of this one is 57 mm high and 43 mm wide, with a chamber 20 mm across and 46 mm deep.
MADE IN DENMARK places the pipe in Stanwell's Danish years, before production moved to Italy in 2010. No closer date is given.
