Old Briar, stamped on the shank, is the only mark on this long and elegant churchwarden.
This is a smooth straight Dublin churchwarden: a smooth briar Dublin bowl on a short shank, with a long tapered vulcanite stem that ends in a fishtail bit. There is no filter. It is a pre-smoked estate pipe, smoked once, in excellent condition.
THE MARKS
- Old Briar, on the shank
A churchwarden is a pipe with a very long stem, which keeps the bowl well away from the face. On this pipe the stem does most of the length: the bowl and shank are short, and the vulcanite runs on in a slow, even taper.
The bowl is a Dublin, the shape that opens a little wider toward the rim, with the front line of the bowl leaning forward. The briar is smooth, in a warm medium brown stain with the grain showing through the finish. The photographs show the pipe from every side, the chamber from above, the stem taken out of the shank, and the stamp close up.
The bit is a fishtail: it flattens and widens toward the tip, which gives the teeth and lips a broad, comfortable surface to rest on.
Condition: pre-smoked once, in excellent condition. Please see the photographs.
