Bruyere Garantie Smooth Bent Pot Briar Estate Pipe with Vulcanite Saddle Stem and Fishtail Bit

The shank is stamped BRUYERE GARANTIE - French for 'guaranteed briar.' No other mark accompanies it.

This is a smooth-finished bent pot in briar, fitted with a black vulcanite saddle stem and a fishtail slot at the bit. It carries no filter.

Beyond that stamp, the shank carries no other name, and no history is attached to it here.

The pot is one of the standard bowl geometries in the briar pipe world: a chamber close to as wide as it is tall, with straight or gently curved walls and a rim that reads flatter and broader than a billiard's. That geometry holds more tobacco by volume for its height than a slimmer shape, and it sits lower and heavier in the hand. Bent, the shank and stem sweep down and back from the bowl, which shifts the weight toward the jaw and lets the pipe be clenched in the teeth without strain on the wrist. Sibling shapes in the same family - the apple, the bulldog, the Dublin - vary the same basic idea of chamber-to-shank proportion; the pot is the roundest and squattest of the group.

The saddle stem is cut with a flat step down from the shank face to a narrower, rounded section at the bit, rather than tapering smoothly along its whole length the way a taper stem does. That step gives a firmer, more defined edge for the teeth to hold against. The fishtail slot - a bit opening that splits into two flat lobes rather than a single round hole - spreads the draw across a wider face at the exit, which is the usual answer to a bore with no filter fitted: airflow that would otherwise pull through one narrow channel is allowed to widen out just before it reaches the smoker's mouth.

A smooth finish leaves the sanded surface of the briar exposed under the stain, rather than covering it in a blasted or rusticated texture. What shows through is whatever grain the block itself carries - straight runs, birdseye flecks, or a mix of both - and a smooth-finished bowl is judged in large part on how much of that grain is visible and how evenly the stain has taken to it. Condition: very good, and previously smoked. The stain shows faint scratches scattered across the briar. The vulcanite stem carries bit marks from use. No crack, no chip, and no repair is reported on this pipe.
