Silver Match 77 Black Sandblast Chimney Pipe - Vulcanite Stem

SILVER MATCH, REAL BRIAR, 77 - three marks on a tall black bowl. This is a straight sandblasted chimney, with a vulcanite tapered stem ending in a fishtail bit. It is pre-smoked, in very good condition.

The chimney takes its name from its proportions: a narrow bowl rises well above the shank, giving the pipe a tall, upright profile. Here the bowl stands 58 mm high, against a width of 34 mm. The straight shank and slender stem keep the outline simple, leaving the height and texture of the bowl to define the shape.

THE MARKS
- SILVER MATCH stamped on the shank
- REAL BRIAR stamped on the shank
- 77 stamped on the shank

REAL BRIAR identifies the bowl material. The number 77 is recorded as it appears; it is not treated as a manufacturing date. No specific production year is established for this pipe.

The finish is a dark sandblast. Blasting removes softer areas of the wood and leaves a textured surface following the harder grain. The resulting relief runs around the bowl and shank, with the black finish emphasizing the ridges and hollows. Unlike a smooth finish, it presents the grain as something felt as well as seen.

The black vulcanite stem tapers gradually from the shank toward its fishtail mouthpiece. A tapered stem follows a continuous narrowing line; the fishtail is the wider, flattened end of the bit. This pipe takes no filter.

Condition: Pre-smoked, in very good condition. The photographs show the finish, rim, chamber, stem and markings, including the pipe with its stem removed.
