LA SAVINELLI / GIUBILEO D'ORO on the shank, and beside the Savinelli shield the shape number 130 KS and ITALY. This is a Savinelli Giubileo d'Oro stack: a tall smooth bowl over a chamber 54 mm deep, an oval shank, and a tapered vulcanite stem with a gentle curve that carries the S shield and ends in a fishtail bit. There is no filter.
Pre-smoked, it is in very good condition.
The Savinelli name begins in 1876, when Achille Savinelli opened a tobacco shop in Milan. His son Carlo took over in 1890 and ran it for about fifty years. Pipes under the Savinelli name came in 1948, when Achille Savinelli Jr. started his own production; Pipedia tells it with Amleto Pome and Mario Vettoruzzo and fifteen employees in the Varese region, while pipephil tells of a partnership with Enea Buzzi at Brebbia, and the two accounts stand side by side. In 1953 Savinelli and Buzzi went separate ways, and Brebbia carried on as its own brand. Savinelli's own factory was at Molina di Barasso. Production has stayed in Italy ever since, and the family is now in its fourth generation with Giancarlo Savinelli.
THE MARKS
- LA SAVINELLI / GIUBILEO D'ORO stamped on the shank
- the Savinelli shield, 130 KS and ITALY stamped on the shank
- the S shield on the stem
The LA before SAVINELLI belongs to the line: pipephil records it on all Giubileo d'Oro pipes, so here it names the Giubileo d'Oro. The same source lists Fiammata as the name Savinelli used for rejected Giubileo d'Oro straight grains.
Savinelli shapes carry three-digit numbers, with KS for King Size, which the 2015 Savinelli catalogue gives as medium to large. Sources name the 130 differently: one dealer lists the 130 KS as a stack, and a Smokingpipes post of 2026 calls the 130 a bent oval. A stack, or chimney, is a tall bowl with straight walls, and this one is 58 mm high and 34 mm wide, with a 20 mm chamber that is 54 mm deep, so the bowl holds a lot of tobacco.
The finish is smooth, and grain lines show on the bowl and the shank.
No date is given for this pipe.
