The Savinelli Punto Oro 611 EX is a Bent Dublin in Extraordinaire size, wearing the Corallo di Mare ("Sea Coral") finish: a deeply textured, unstained surface in natural honey-brown. This one is pre-smoked, in very good to excellent condition.
THE MAKER
Savinelli began as a shop, not a factory. In 1876 Achille Savinelli Sr. opened a tobacco shop in Milan, and in 1890 his son Carlo took it over and ran it for about fifty years. Pipe making followed in 1948, when Achille Jr. started Savinelli pipe production in the Varese region; the sources differ on his partners (one names Amleto Pome and Mario Vettoruzzo, another an association with Enea Buzzi at Brebbia), and both accounts are kept. In 1953 Savinelli split from Buzzi, whose Brebbia pipes continue as their own brand, and the company built its own factory at Molina di Barasso. Production has stayed in Italy ever since, and the fourth generation, Giancarlo Savinelli, now runs the house.
THE MARKS
- SAVINELLI over PUNTO ORO, stamped
- Shield logo, 611 EX, ITALY, stamped
Punto Oro (Gold Dot) is, in his words, Savinelli's top-tier line, and Savinelli's own staff say they began producing it in the 1950s. His notes describe Corallo di Mare as a variant of that line introduced in the 1960s. The number 611 is a Bent Dublin (dealer sources differ on the exact name), and the suffix EX stands for Extraordinaire, a very large size in Savinelli's 2015 catalogue.
DATING
The three-digit shape number means this is not from the early four-digit era (Savinelli moved to three digits during the 1970s). The Punto Oro line runs from the 1950s to today and the ITALY stamp only confirms production since 1948, so none of these marks narrows the age further. No year is claimed here.
THE SHAPE AND THE FINISH
A flared, conical bowl rises from a gracefully curved shank, and the bent black vulcanite saddle stem completes the profile. The bowl and shank carry a deep, heavy texture in natural, unstained wood, His notes say this "virgin" finish takes up oils from the tobacco and the hands and ages into a deep honey-bronze patina over the decades. A soft pouch printed LA SAVINELLI punto oro appears in several photographs.
Condition: pre-smoked, in very good to excellent condition.
