Savinelli Collection 1994 Sandblasted Billiard Pipe with 1994 Shank Plaque

SAVINELLI, 1994, ITALY on the shank, and a small plaque set into the shank that repeats the year: 1994, collection. This is a Savinelli Collection pipe of 1994, a sandblasted billiard on a straight stem.

SAVINELLI and 1994 are clear in the stamp; ITALY is small and faint. The words on the plaque are in script. Please see the photographs for the condition.

In 1876 Achille Savinelli Sr. opened a tobacco shop in Milan, and from 1890 his son Carlo ran it for about fifty years. Pipe making under the Savinelli name came in 1948, when Achille Jr. started production. The accounts of that start differ: one names Amleto Pome and Mario Vettoruzzo, with fifteen employees in the Varese region; another tells of an association with Enea Buzzi at Brebbia (the Brebbia records date that joint firm to 1947). In 1953 Savinelli and Buzzi split and Brebbia went on as its own brand; Savinelli's own factory is at Molina di Barasso. Production has stayed in Italy throughout.

THE MARKS

- SAVINELLI / 1994 / ITALY (ITALY faint), stamped on a smooth part of the shank
- A small plaque set into the shank, reading 1994 and collection in script

Savinelli's Collection pipes carry their year in plain figures: pipephil shows a 1987 example stamped Savinelli, 1987, Italy, with 1987 and Collection on its plaque. This pipe follows the same pattern with 1994, so it is the Collection pipe of that year. The Savinelli catalogue of 2015 still shows Collection pipes of 2012 to 2015.

A billiard has a cylindrical bowl at a right angle to a straight shank, and this one keeps the straight line through to the stem. The stem is black, with a separate ring section between the tenon and the black part, seen with the stem off the pipe.

The sandblast covers the bowl and the shank, and the part of the shank that carries the stamp is left smooth. Please see the photographs for the blast, the rim and the chamber.
