Vuillard Toulouse Saint Claude 450 Rough Sandblast Square Panel Vulcanite Stem Estate Pipe

Vuillard in underlined script, then TOULOUSE, 450 and SAINT-CLAUDE: a very elegant French featherweight, size 2, made for a quick smoke. This is a Vuillard Toulouse 450 from Saint-Claude, a square-paneled straight pipe in a rough sandblast, on a vulcanite tapered stem that is squared to match.

It is pre-smoked and in very good condition, with some darkness on the rim. The stamp reads clearly, and the stem carries a white V on its side. Please see the photographs for the rim and the chamber.

Saint-Claude is the French town the stamp names. Briar arrived there in 1856, and the town grew into the world capital of the briar pipe.

Vuillard is one of the Saint-Claude names. In 1988 the house of Emile Vuillard came together with Chapuis-Comoy, the maker of the Chacom brand, and with Jeantet-David and Jean Lacroix, in a holding company called Cuty-Fort Entreprises. Production was shared from then on, while every brand kept its own name on its pipes.

The meaning of TOULOUSE and of 450 in this stamp is not known.

On a paneled pipe the bowl is cut with flat sides instead of a round wall. Here the bowl and the shank are both paneled, and the vulcanite stem is squared too. The bowl is 44 mm high and 31 mm wide around a chamber 18 mm across and 37 mm deep, and the pipe is 143 mm long and weighs 31 g.

The finish is a rough sandblast over the bowl and the shank, with deep ridges that you can feel. No date is given for this pipe.
