Stanwell Royal 98 - sandblasted straight Lovat, made in Denmark
The shape. Stanwell shape 98 was made in two versions. The one most often found, as here, is the Lovat / Lovat pot: a stout, broad pot-style bowl with the classic Lovat lines - a long, round shank and a very short saddle mouthpiece. The other version is a shorter-shanked pot with a wide, thick-walled bowl. (Source: Pipedia, Stanwell shape list.)
The series. In Stanwell's range of the mid to late 20th century, the Royal (Royal Briar) series was a popular middle grade. Its sandblast is dark and craggy: the blasting cuts away the softer wood and leaves the harder ring grain, so the pipe is light and stays cool in the hand.
The maker. Stanwell was founded in Denmark in 1942 by Poul Nielsen and registered as Stanwell in 1948. Danish production ended in 2009; later Stanwells are made by Barontini in Italy, so this Danish-made pipe comes from the classic years.
The pipe. Vulcanite saddle stem, fishtail mouthpiece, no filter.
Stamps. STANWELL / MADE IN DENMARK / ROYAL / 98.
Condition. Pre-smoked, in very good condition. Please see the photos.
