Matadoz in script over BRUYERE in capitals: this is a sandblasted briar billiard whose chamber is lined with a meerschaum insert, fitted with a vulcanite tapered stem.
The insert shows as a pale ring at the rim of the bowl.
THE MARKS
- Matadoz in script, stamped on the shank
- BRUYERE in capitals, with an accent on the second E, stamped on the shank
BRUYERE is the French word for briar, so the stamp names the wood. No date is given for this pipe.
The billiard is the classic pipe shape: a bowl shaped like a cylinder, set on a shank. Here the bowl is 45 mm high and 34 mm wide around a chamber 20 mm across and 40 mm deep, and the whole pipe is 150 mm long and weighs 37 g. A meerschaum insert means the tobacco burns against a meerschaum lining inside the briar bowl. The vulcanite stem tapers from the shank to the bit.
The sandblast covers the bowl and the shank.
