HYDE PARK, LONDON MADE, and RUGGY 409 on a smooth panel of the shank: a bent bulldog in a finish that sits between a sandblast and a rustication, on a vulcanite saddle stem with a fishtail bit and no filter.
It is pre-smoked and in very good condition, with tiny bite marks on the stem. The stamps are clear, and a small round gold-coloured logo with the letters HP sits on the side of the stem.
Hyde Park is one of the names on pipephil's list of second lines of Comoy's of London. Francois Comoy began making pipes in Saint-Claude, France, in 1825; in 1879 Henri Comoy moved to London, and the wording London Made is credited to him. The firm was incorporated as H. Comoy & Co Ltd in 1914.
Second lines like Hyde Park follow their own rules, and Comoy's own marks do not date them, so no date is given for this pipe.
THE MARKS
- HYDE PARK on the shank
- LONDON MADE on the shank
- RUGGY 409 on the shank
- a small round gold-coloured logo with the letters HP on the stem
A bulldog is usually made with a diamond, four-sided shank and a saddle stem; on this one the shank and the saddle of the stem have flat sides, the bowl is rounded, and the pipe is bent. A saddle stem is wide and flat near the shank and steps down to a thinner bit; this one ends in a fishtail.
The craggy finish covers the bowl and the shank.
