A small bowl with leaf-like relief carving, a straight shank and a black tapered stem: this vest pocket pipe carries no maker's stamp. It is pre-smoked, in fair condition.
At 137 mm long and 19 g, the pipe belongs to the compact end of the traditional straight-pipe family. Its textured bowl is the distinguishing feature. Raised decorative forms run around the sides, giving the surface an appearance closer to relief carving than to an undecorated smooth bowl.
THE MARKS
- No maker's stamp recorded
Without a maker's name, no workshop or manufacturing date is claimed. The description rests on the pipe itself: a small straight bowl, a narrow shank and a stem that tapers toward a fishtail mouthpiece.
Rustication and decorative carving both alter the surface of the wood, but neither should be mistaken for natural grain. Here the leaf-like pattern is part of the bowl's decoration. The photographs show the pattern around the bowl, along with the rim and chamber.
The stem is acrylic, as recorded for this pipe, with a tapered outline and a fishtail bit. The mouthpiece broadens at its end into the familiar flat shape. There is no filter.
Condition: Pre-smoked, in fair condition. Please examine the photographs for the wear to the bowl, finish, rim and stem; the pipe is offered in the condition shown. The separated stem and its fitting are also pictured.
