The Spitfire 8507 is a Danish-inspired pickaxe: a forward-leaning conical bowl that tapers sharply to a pointed heel, finished in a dark rustic texture, with a very thin vulcanite tapered bent stem and a fishtail bit. It is pre-smoked, in very good condition.
THE MAKER
Spitfire is the budget sister brand of Lorenzo, of Gallarate near Varese in Italy. The house began as Fratelli Lana in 1900, became Manufattura di Pipe Tagliabue in 1946 under Tagliabue, and took the name Lorenzo Pipes in 1969. Spitfire carried the same models as Lorenzo, mostly in the 9 mm size and smaller classics. Tagliabue retired in 1983, and in 1988 the Aliverti family bought the rights and production resumed.
THE MARKS
The stamp reads Spitfire, Genuine Briar and 8507. The marks give no year, and the dating of Spitfire is only roughly known, so no year is claimed here.
SHAPE AND STEM
The 8507 is a sculpted pickaxe. The conical bowl leans forward and ends in a pointed heel, and the thin vulcanite stem curves up and away from it to a fishtail bit. There is no filter.
FINISH AND GRAIN
The bowl is deeply textured in a rustic finish, dark with lighter ridges that run along the bowl, and the shank is rusticated to match.
CONDITION
Pre-smoked, in very good condition.
