Raganella over MILANO is stamped in script on the left side of the shank of this pipe, with B 36 next to the stem and Italia on the shank. It is a very nice old-style oom paul: a smooth, full bent pipe with a tall cylinder bowl, a black vulcanite saddle stem and a fishtail bit. There is no filter.
Condition: pre-smoked, in very good condition.
THE MARKS
- Raganella over MILANO, in script, on the left side of the shank
- B 36, on the shank next to the stem
- Italia, on the shank
THE MAKER
The stamps name the maker Raganella, the city of Milano and the country Italia (Italy). No history of the maker is given here.
THE SHAPE AND THE STEM
The oom paul is the full bent shape with a tall bowl. Here the bowl is a straight-sided cylinder with a flat bottom, so the pipe stands on its own on the table. The black vulcanite saddle stem curves up and over in a full bend. A small white diamond-shaped inlay sits on the side of the saddle. The stem ends in a fishtail bit, flat and widening at the end. With the stem out of the shank, a plain tenon can be seen in the photographs: this pipe takes no filter.
THE FINISH
The bowl and the shank are smooth, in a reddish-brown stain. Bird's-eye grain and swirling grain show on the walls of the bowl. The black stem gives a clear contrast to the warm color of the bowl.
