78 and Piccadilly in script, with an underline: this is a Piccadilly sandblast bent billiard on a vulcanite tapered stem with a P-lip mouthpiece.
It takes no filter.
THE MARKS
- 78, then Piccadilly in script with an underline, stamped on the shank (the 8 is faint)
Piccadilly is also the name of a line in a 1973 Oldenkott catalogue, in its Filter/Special chapter. This pipe carries no Oldenkott mark and takes no filter, so it cannot be tied to that line. The meaning of 78 is not known, and no date is given for this pipe.
The billiard is the classic pipe shape, a bowl shaped like a cylinder set on a shank, and this one is bent. The bowl is 47 mm high and 36 mm wide, with a chamber 20 mm across and 42 mm deep; the whole pipe is 143 mm long and weighs 50 g. The vulcanite stem tapers to the P-lip mouthpiece.
The sandblast covers the bowl and the shank, and the stamp sits on a smoother part of the shank.
Condition: pre-smoked, in very good condition.
