The Peterson System Standard 307 is a bent System pipe with a deep bowl, a nickel military mount and a vulcanite P-lip stem. This one is pre-smoked, in very good condition, and it comes with its original Peterson sleeve.
THE MAKER
Kapp & Peterson of Dublin are known for the System pipe, made to keep moisture away from the mouth. Charles Peterson's pipe patent was granted in 1890, and the System pipe uses a reservoir in the shank and a tapering mouthpiece for exactly this purpose. A Dublin court case of 1894 describes the system in these terms. The System line has been made since 1896, and shape 307, the Extra-Large Billiard, has been in it from the start to the present day.
THE MARKS
The shank is stamped PETERSON'S SYSTEM STANDARD, with 307 and "Made in the Republic of Ireland". The nickel mount carries K&P and PETERSON'S with the Peterson hallmark-style marks. These marks give no year. The date comes from the country stamp: "Republic of Ireland" was used from 1949, so this pipe is from 1949 or later.
SHAPE AND STEM
The bowl is deep and sturdy, set on the reservoir shank, and the nickel military mount leads into a vulcanite stem with a clean bend and a P-lip bit. There is no filter.
FINISH AND GRAIN
The briar is smooth, in a natural honey-brown to red-brown stain, with busy bird's-eye and cross grain over the bowl.
CONDITION
Pre-smoked, in very good condition. The original Peterson sleeve is included: a red pouch with the Peterson name in gold script.
