THE DRACULA SERIES

Peterson introduced the Dracula series in 2012, marking the centenary of Bram Stoker's death - and the connection is not a marketing stretch: Stoker was a Dubliner, born in Clontarf on the city's north side, and his 1897 gothic novel is as much a Dublin export as the pipes themselves. The series dresses standard Peterson shapes in theatrical eveningwear: black rustic or sandblast bowls, a bright nickel separator, and that red-and-black marbled stem. It has run as one of the house's most popular themed lines ever since, alongside the Sherlock Holmes series in Peterson's literary cabinet. As a Dracula, this pipe dates from 2012 at the earliest - a contemporary Peterson, not an antique, offered here as a lightly-used estate piece.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT

The firm began in 1865 as the Kapp brothers' tobacco and pipe shop on Grafton Street, Dublin. Charles Peterson - a craftsman from Riga who gave the house its name and its engineering spine - joined in the 1870s, patented the famous System in 1890, and built the brand's reputation on inventive, functional design. A century and a half later the company still numbers its shapes methodically: the 106 is one of the fuller billiards in the standard catalog, a size up in presence and chamber from the 06 family, with a sturdy shank and confident proportions.
