Passatore Italian Shiny Ebony Bent Dublin Estate Pipe, Black Stem

Passatore is written in script on the left side of the shank, with ITALY close to the stem end: a bent Dublin in a shiny ebony finish, with a black stem.

On this pipe the walls of the Dublin bowl widen as they rise, so the rim is broader than the base, and the pipe is bent. The high shine runs over the whole bowl and shank. Two thin pale lines ring the stem a short way from the shank.

THE MAKER

Passatore appears in Pipedia's list of Italian pipe brands, where the entry carries no description. A pipe stamped Passatore with the number 393 is pictured in a collection of pipe logos and markings, again without text. Who made Passatore pipes, and in which years, is still an open question.

DATING

Neither stamp carries a year, and the brand's own years are not known, so this pipe cannot be dated from its marks. ITALY on the shank agrees with the brand's place among Italian makers.
