Oldenkott Red and Black Large Bent Billiard Estate Pipe, Oval Shank, 9mm Filter

Oldenkott in script, with RED and BLACK stamped under it: this is a large Oldenkott Red and Black bent billiard in smooth briar, with an oval shank and a vulcanite tapered stem ending in a fishtail mouthpiece, made for a 9 mm filter.

It is pre-smoked and in very good condition, with faint scratches around the briar. Both stamp lines are clear on the shank.

The bowl is 54 mm high and 44 mm wide, with a chamber 48 mm deep and 20 mm across. A billiard bowl has straight sides, and on a bent billiard the bowl keeps that form while the pipe is bent. The shank is oval, wider than it is high, and the stem tapers from it to the fishtail.

Oldenkott was a tobacco name long before it was a pipe name. Family lines at Rees and at Ahaus go back to the 1740s and 1760s, and a print of 1918 names "Herms, Oldenkott und Zonen in Ahaus" with a branch in Amsterdam.

Pipes came later. Berlin newspapers carried advertisements for "Original Oldenkott" pipes in 1926, and the firm's own pipe production began in 1932. The Dutch firm Niemeijer bought it in 1972, and from 1974 the company made pipes only. The Kersten family bought the pipe company back in 1987, and the factory closed in 1992. In 2012 the marks went to Alexander Strahnz of Cologne, who brought the name back with pipes made in Italy.

THE MARKS

- Oldenkott in script, stamped on the shank
