Oldenkot Grand Derby Luxe Select Sandblast Straight Pipe Estate

This is a smoker's pipe, not a shelf piece: a compact straight-shanked horn in sandblasted briar, sized for a coat pocket and fitted with a metal cooler in place of a paper or charcoal filter.

The bowl is a sandblasted straight horn, the stem a tapered vulcanite fishtail, and the shank carries Oldenkott's own metal cooler insert rather than a filter cartridge.

Kruger smoked Oldenkott Knaster in exile, and his likeness appeared on Oldenkott packets by 1901.

'Original Oldenkott' pipes were advertised nationally in Berlin from 1926, and in 1929 the firm bought the Ahaus and Neuss Hermann-Oldenkott factories.

The bowl is described as a straight horn: a profile that tapers steadily from a wider base toward the rim, without a shoulder or forward curve, closer to the line of an animal horn than to the parallel walls of a billiard or the rounded bowl of an apple. Built on a straight shank, the line runs unbroken from bowl to button, so the pipe reads as a single continuous sweep when held or set on a rack. At 52mm tall and 30mm across the bowl, with a 45mm chamber depth, this is a small pipe by any measure - a genuine pocket size built for a short smoke rather than an evening bowl. The vulcanite stem is cut with a taper rather than a saddle, narrowing steadily from shank to button, and finishes in a fishtail slot at the bit - a wide, flared opening rather than a round drilled airway, spreading the draw across a broader slot at the lip.

In place of a filter cartridge, the shank carries a metal cooler: a fixed metal element seated in the airway, intended to draw heat and moisture from the smoke before it reaches the stem, without adding the resistance a paper or charcoal cartridge introduces to the draw.

Finish and grain: see the photographs. The note records the briar as sandblasted, a finish cut by directing an abrasive stream across the shaped bowl after turning. The blast erodes the softer summer growth faster than the harder winter grain, leaving the wood's own contours standing proud under the fingers rather than under a stain. It is a finish that also conceals surface flaws a smooth polish would show, one reason briar not suited to a show-grade smooth finish is often sandblasted instead.

Condition: pre-smoked, graded by the seller as very good vintage condition. The rim shows darkening from use. The vulcanite stem carries bite marks near the button, consistent with a pipe that was carried and smoked rather than kept on display.
