This is a short, chubby billiard in smooth briar, fitted with a tapered vulcanite stem cut to a fishtail bit and bored for a 9mm filter. The pipe has been smoked before and comes to this listing pre-owned.

The billiard is the reference shape against which most other patterns are measured. A straight shank runs into a bowl with vertical walls rising from a flat heel, and the rim is cut parallel to the base, so the whole pipe reads as upright and balanced rather than dramatic. It is often the shape a new pipe smoker is handed first, because there is nothing about the geometry to misjudge: no bend to account for in the hand, no flare to catch a thumb.

This example is built short and chubby - a wider, lower-slung bowl than a standard billiard, set close to the shank rather than standing tall above it. That proportion puts more tobacco within reach of a shorter draw and keeps the weight low and central, so the pipe sits easily in the hand or the teeth without the leverage a taller bowl would put on the jaw.
