MPB Pietra 134 Smooth Bent Italian Estate Pipe, Diamond Mark on Stem

MPB inside a diamond, then PIETRA, ITALY and 134, all on the shank, and a small diamond mark on the stem.

This is a smooth bent Italian pipe with a round bowl, a grooved metal band at the end of the shank and a black bent stem. The band stays on the shank when the stem comes out. The shank marks are clear; the letters of the stem mark cannot be read.

THE MAKER

MPB stands for Manifattura Pipe Brebbia. The story begins in 1947, when Enea Buzzi and Achille Savinelli founded a joint firm at Bosco Grosso di Brebbia, in Varese, and sold its pipes under the SAVINELLI name. In 1953 the two parted: Savinelli built his own plant at Barasso, Buzzi kept the Brebbia factory, and the M.P.B. brand was born (1953 by pipephil; another source dates the formal buyout to 22 June 1956).

In 1968 the M.P.B. logo gave way to a simple gold-outlined diamond, and the brand word became Brebbia alone. From the 1990s Luciano Buzzi managed the firm.

THE MARKS

- MPB inside a diamond on the shank
- PIETRA on the shank
- ITALY on the shank
- 134 on the shank
- Small diamond-shaped metal mark on the stem, letters not readable

The bowl is round and the pipe is bent, so bowl and stem do not lie on one line. The finish is smooth, and the grooved band closes the shank with a line of metal against the black stem.

DATING

These marks pull two ways, and the honest answer is that they do not fix one window. An MPB stamp belongs to the years from 1953 (one source says 1956) to 1968. But Brebbia's own 2016 catalogue material shows the M.P.B. logo revived about 2008 for Vintage, silver-ferrule and pipe-of-the-year lines, so an MPB stamp alone does not prove age. The diamond on the stem is, in its gold-outlined form, the logo from 1968 onward. No year is known for PIETRA or for the number 134.
