Some estate pipes arrive with a full roll call of stampings - country of origin, shape number, grade line. This one carries a single word on the shank: Bruyere.

A small straight apple pot in briar, acrylic saddle stem cut to a fishtail slot, no filter. Built to vest-pocket scale - a working pipe meant to travel light, not to sit on a rack.

Bruyere is the French word for briar, the wood itself. It appears here alone, without a shape number, a country stamp, or a grade line beside it. We name it exactly as it is stamped and take it no further - no firm, no era, and no place of manufacture is attached to a single word on a shank.

The apple and the pot are two separate lineages in pipe design that meet in this bowl. An apple runs rounder through the walls than a billiard, curving inward toward a narrower top rather than staying parallel; a pot is shorter and wider through the chamber than a billiard of the same length, built to hold more tobacco in less vertical space. This bowl carries both traits at a reduced scale: a full, rounded profile on a chamber that measures 28mm deep and 17mm across, on a pipe that is 133mm long overall and weighs 20 grams. That combination of geometry and size is what vest pocket means in practice - a bowl with real presence in the hand but light and short enough to ride in a pocket without announcing itself.

The stem is acrylic, cut with a saddle profile: the shank-side of the mouthpiece steps down in diameter rather than tapering smoothly into the shank, so it sits slightly proud where the two meet. The bit ends in a fishtail slot, a flattened, forked opening rather than a single round bore. A fishtail spreads the airway wider at the point where the smoke reaches the tongue, which tends to soften the draw compared with a narrow round slot. No filter is fitted; the draw runs straight through bowl, shank, and stem with nothing in the path to interrupt it.

Finish and grain: the bowl is finished smooth, per the seller's description. Color and grain pattern are best read from the photographs themselves.
