Medico Standard Select Briar Sandblast Straight Billiard Estate Pipe, No Filter

MEDICO, STANDARD and SELECT BRIAR, three clear lines of capitals on a smooth panel of the shank: this is a sandblast straight billiard with a vulcanite tapered stem, a fishtail mouthpiece and no filter.

It is pre-smoked, in good condition.

Medico belongs to S.M. Frank & Co, a firm that goes back to Sam Frank, who was selling pipes from 1900; together with Ferdinand Feuerbach it also made the Royal DeMuth and Hesson Guard Milano lines. The Medico name arrived in 1933, launched at the same time as an absorbent paper filter, and the filter patent, number 1,967,585, was filed in 1933 and granted in 1934. In 1955 S.M. Frank bought the Kaywoodie brands, while Medico carried on unchanged. In 1966 a briar and resin material called Brylon was developed and some Medico lines moved to it; the briar lines continued. In England, Medico pipes were sold through Cadogan and Oppenheimer Pipe.

The billiard is the classic briar shape: a bowl shaped like a cylinder, set on a straight shank. Here the bowl is 46 mm high and 35 mm wide around a chamber 20 mm across and 38 mm deep, and the pipe is 150 mm long and weighs 34 g. A thin metal ring sits at the front end of the tapered stem, a metal tube is fitted on the tenon, and the stem ends in a fishtail mouthpiece.

The sandblast covers the bowl and the shank, with a smooth panel on the shank that carries the stamp.
