Spitfire in script over BY LORENZO, with MONTEROSSO on the other side of the shank: a bright red Dublin from Lorenzo's cheaper brand.
This is a smooth Dublin in a bright red stain, with an oval vulcanite saddle stem, a 9mm filter and a fishtail bit. It is a pre-smoked estate pipe, in excellent, mint condition.
THE MARKS
- Spitfire, in script
- BY LORENZO
- MONTEROSSO
- a red logo on the stem
THE MAKER
Lorenzo began as Fratelli Lana, founded in 1900 in Gallarate, in the province of Varese, Italy. The Tagliabue family took the firm over in 1946, and in 1969 the brand was renamed Lorenzo Pipes. Pipedia describes the Lorenzos of that time as pipes with thick walls, broad stems and a silk-matte finish in bold red or bright orange stain. Spitfire was Lorenzo's cheaper brand: Pipedia says it made Lorenzo models one to one, mainly for the 9mm filter, plus smaller classic shapes. In 1988 the Aliverti family bought the rights to the Lorenzo name.
DATING
Our Lorenzo record places the Spitfire line in Lorenzo's cult era, about 1969 to 1990, but no source documents when the line began or ended, so this window is a low-confidence guide, not a firm date. The Monterosso name is not dated by any source we hold.
THE PIPE
A Dublin bowl opens a little wider toward the rim. The red stain runs over smooth briar with the grain showing through, and the oval vulcanite saddle stem carries the 9mm filter and ends in a fishtail bit that flattens and widens toward the tip. The photographs show the pipe from every side, the chamber from above, the stem taken out of the shank, and both stamps close up.
Condition: pre-smoked, in excellent, mint condition. Please see the photographs.
