LORENZO over MONTE BIANCO over 101, struck on the shank, tells you who made this big, bright full bent pipe.
This is a smooth full bent Oom Paul by Lorenzo of Gallarate, Italy, in a bright orange stain, with a freehand-style saddle vulcanite stem, a 9mm filter and a fishtail bit. It is a pre-smoked estate pipe in excellent condition.
THE MARKS
- Lorenzo, in the maker's script logo
- MONTE BIANCO
- 101
Lorenzo began as Fratelli Lana, founded in Gallarate in the province of Varese in 1900. The Tagliabue family took the firm over in 1946, and in 1969 the brand was renamed Lorenzo Pipes. Pipedia describes the Lorenzos of that time as pipes with thick walls, broad stems and a silk-matte finish in bold red or bright orange stain, and names a big Oom Paul, made in many variants, as the house best seller. This pipe follows that line: a full bent Oom Paul in a bright orange stain. In 1988 the Aliverti family bought the rights to the Lorenzo name. The Lorenzo wordmark tells us the pipe was most likely made in or after 1969; no source we hold dates the Monte Bianco line or the number 101, so we give no closer year.
An Oom Paul is the deepest bend of all: the shank runs low and the stem rises in a full curve beside the bowl, so the pipe hangs easily from the teeth and the bowl sits close to the chin. On this pipe the briar is smooth and rounded, with the grain showing through the orange stain. The vulcanite saddle stem swells into a rounded collar near the shank before it rises in its curve, a freehand touch.
The stem takes a 9mm filter. The bit is a fishtail: it flattens and widens toward the tip, which gives the teeth and lips a broad, comfortable surface to rest on.
Condition: pre-smoked, in excellent condition. Please see the photographs.
