A small, clean Loewe lovat from one of the oldest pipe houses in London: the Original series, stamped with the shape name Inverness, in vest pocket size and smoked only once.
THE PIPE
This is a smooth straight lovat with a vulcanite saddle stem and a fishtail bit. It takes no filter. The briar has a smooth orange-brown finish, shown in the photos. At 127 mm long and 30 g it is a true vest pocket pipe: light in the hand and easy to carry, with a full-size chamber of 20 mm by 41 mm.
STAMPS
- Left shank: L&Co in an oval, with ORIGINAL below it
- Right shank: LOEWE / LONDON W.
- Underside: INVERNESS
- Stem: L&Co in an oval
- A number 375 is also noted on the pipe.
The stamps are shown in the close-up photos.
THE MAKER
Loewe & Co. was founded in 1856 in the Haymarket, London. In 1920 the company was bought by Civic, but the quality and the stamps of Loewe pipes stayed the same until 1964. The L&Co oval on the shank and on the stem, together with "Loewe London W.", is the house mark collectors look for.
DATING
Two stamps on this pipe give its window. Loewe introduced its first series names in 1955: Centurion, Original and Old English. So the ORIGINAL stamp means 1955 or later. Loewe stamped town shape names such as Inverness under the shank until about 1964 to 1968, when three-digit shape numbers replaced the names. Together they place this pipe in about 1955 to 1968. The pipe historian Lankton warns that some Original-stamped pipes may have been made in the Civic period after 1964, so the exact year inside that window cannot be read from the stamps alone.
CONDITION
Pre-smoked, in excellent condition: it has been smoked once. Please see the photos for the condition.
